Default My computer is on its ar$e

My computer is well and truely on its arse.

It started last night, my computer wouldn't boot, and didn't even reach post.

When it did boot into windows it would freeze and lock up after about 15min to 2 hrs, and it would struggle to reboot and it would freeze again.

So far I have done the following;

AV check ( although it locks up) this has been none in windows and safe mode.

System restore

removed sound card

Tried each memory stick in turn and in a different slot.

Removed each graphics card's in turn.

Disconected all HDDs except C:

Tried using diff operating OS on different HDDs, one with 7 and one with Vista

Reinstalled windows

All in all I am now at a loss as to what to do next because after doing all of that the fault is still apparent.

The only two things that haven't been changed is the CPU and mobo.

Does anyone have any ideas??

to be honest Wilf, I don't have a clue whats wrong, I just thought I should price up a new mobo or new cpu and I am fooked I cant find a good mobo for a LGA775 chipset due to the cpu being obsolete.

A CPU worth over a grand 2 years ago and now I am fooked for finding a mobo for it, if it is that, that has gone tits up.

But saying that I have looked at new mobo and steve mentioned a hex core cpu and the best I can find is under 400 the pair, the CPU by the looks has better specs too

I know this is a long shot Perc freezing is normally down to heat issues but i would rule this out due to booting - have you replaced cables as well as components - has the bios chips on the board creeped out due to heat also try removing the power lead remove cmos battery for 1 min replace then replace power and see if its a cmos issue.

Have you reseated the cpu also and reapplied thermal paste

If i think of more will let you know

I know whats wrong its the owner. It cant understand you. LOLOL

I would take it all apart and rebuild. There is always the oven. seems to fix everything these days.

I had a look on google, one to try was, lower the fsb speed.

Have a look to see if cpu and mb are still under warrenty

Terry has this magic oven which apparently can fix any broken electronics. You should give it a go. "If it doesn't work, bake it."

I am Tel's house now, and after 4 hrs we have got it down to the mobo.
Now this is a pain in the arse, I have a LGA775 cpu and they dont make top end mobo for them any mmore by the looks of things.
So I am now looking at options to save my CPU and or Gphx cards (SLI).

Not a happy bunny

I was thinking about replacing it with THIS and THIS as a CPU.
This way I can keep my graphics cards in SLI

Sadly SLI isn't really supported with the top end AMD's yet... And as ATi are made by AMD, they tend to favour crossfire...
