Default Laptop - external monitor support help

Hi guys,

You've never let me down before so I've come to my trusted experts for some advice.

My apologies in advance if I explain this badly but my aim is to find the easiest and cheapest way of being able to utilise my two external monitors at home (currently both connected via divi cables to desktop pc) so they can both be used as external monitors for my work laptop.

I don't want to disconnect each monitor from my desktop every time I want to use them with the laptop. Ideally I want to have them connected to desktop at all times as a default, but be able to drop laptop on desk and plug in one or two things and away I go! Might not be possible but you guys would know.

Laptop. Dell Ultrabook Latitude E7440.
USB, Hdmi and Mini DisplayPort

Monitor 1
DisplayPort, USB, VGA and DVI

Monitor 2
VGA and DVI

Thanks..

Do you need both monitors on the laptop too? If you just want one, get a miniDP - DP adapter and use the "Monitor 1" and with it's own source selector you can choose DVI (Desktop PC) or DP (Laptop).

If you need both monitors with the laptop, possibly the easiest way is to update monitor 2 to one with both DVI and HDMI connectors and then you can also plug that straight to both PC's and use monitor's source selection. Other option is to get also HDMI-DVI adapter and swap the cable from behind the monitor 2 to be used with chosen PC.

Hope this gives some ideas. There might be some more simple solution but i just woke up

You can try something like this ofcourse with the monitor 2 and it's VGA:

Converting from HDMI to VGA (digital to analog) needs an active adapter / scaler and might reduce quality. If you get one of those cheap, that might be worth a go if you don't want to swap any cables or get a new monitor.

And one more idea.. Get a dock for the E7440. Those usually have two DVI ports and then get some DVI splitter cables for the monitors. Never tried that, so i don't know if the monitors get confused when two signals are being transmitted via one cable to the same DVI port. Or then use dock with two DVIs, one with DVI-VGA adapter (monitor 2), one with DVI-DP or DVI-VGA adapters to monitor 2.

Ok, i'll stop now.

Thanks Plasma. I was tempted by the dock but it was a little expensive for my liking.

I'm not keen on buying another monitor as i'm trying to do this as cheaply as possible but as i'm so lazy I'm looking for something which doesn't involve much fiddling around each time i want to switch between the two. (Monitors aren't designed to constantly be played with).

Would two of the below work? Anyone ever used switches? Would i get any sort of delay or quality loss? I'd need two of the below, 5 DVI cables, HDMI male to DVI Male cable and a mini DP to DVI adapter.

Could add up to quite a bit... i might just use on external monitor!

Buy a hdmi to (whatever port is empty on the back of your monitor) and switch between inputs on the soft panel of your monitor when you want to show your laptop.
Or have i just over simplified this?
My monitors both have 2 inputs but can only show 1 input at a time which is selected using the monitor buttons
